Finding a place value lesson that is ready to teach, with the game and the exit slip, takes longer than teaching it.

This one is ours, from the Pine Hollow Math membership, and it is free: the plan, the bell ringer, the guided notes, the slides, the game, the worksheet and the exit slip. Open the files below and teach it tomorrow. It fits one 50 minute class.

What students do

The objective is one sentence: read and write numbers to 999 using hundreds, tens and ones. Every piece asks the same question in a new place, "What number do the blocks show?", so students build the number from base-ten blocks first and write it second. The word to know is place value: what a digit is worth because of where it sits.

The bell ringer (5 minutes)

Four sets of blocks, four numbers to write. Students work alone, then you go over the answers together. It shows in five minutes who still reads 3 hundreds as 30.

  1. Hand out the bell ringer as students come in.
  2. Give five minutes, alone.
  3. Go over the four answers together before the notes.

The guided notes and the slides (15 minutes)

Three examples, three steps: watch me first (549), try it with me (739), now you try (709). The six slides match the notes page, so you project and they fill in. The third example has a zero in the tens place on purpose; that is the one to talk about.

The game: Race to the Pines (15 minutes)

Partners share a board of 26 three-digit numbers and a page of 12 question cards. Take turns, flip a card, answer it; if your partner agrees, move ahead one space. First to the pines wins. Walk the room and listen to the math talk; the game is where you hear who can explain a digit's value and who is guessing.

The worksheet and the exit slip (15 minutes)

The worksheet has 14 problems over two pages for independent practice, so you can pull a small group for anyone who is stuck. The exit slip is two problems and a how-do-you-feel line, two slips to a page. Collect them and sort into got it, almost and not yet; tomorrow's small group is the not-yet pile.

If students are stuck, go back to the blocks: build the number first, then write it, and keep the numbers small until it clicks.
